Grabeel was born in Springfield, Missourithe son of Jean and Stephen Grabeel.[1] He graduated from Kickapoo High School in Springfield, Missouri in 2003 and then moved to Los Angeles to become an actor.
Several months after the move, he landed his first Disney Channel Original Movie, Halloweentown High. His debut performance was in the blockbuster made- for television Disney movie, High School Musical as Ryan Evans, in which he sang two duet songs with Ashley Tisdale, "What I've Been Looking For" and "Bop to the Top". He also sang with Zac Efron, Vanessa Hudgens, and Ashley Tisdale in "I Can't Take My Eyes Off of You" which was not in the movie, but was an extra track on the soundtrack. Grabeel is a tenor. He made a guest appearance on The Suite Life Of Zack and Cody, a show starring High School Musical co-star Ashley Tisdale. Ashley Tisdale and he were the first two High School Musical stars to guest in a Disney Channel Original Series.
Grabeel has made TV guest appearances on TV series such as Boston Legal, Smallville, Til Death, and Veronica Mars. He also participated in the first ever Disney Channel Games and co-captained the green team along with Ashley Tisdale, Mitchel Musso, Miley Cyrus, Emily Osment and Kyle Massey. Grabeel also reprised his role as Ethan Dalloway in the fourth Halloweentown movie, "Return to Halloweentown". On Thanksgiving Day 2006, he was featured on a High School Musical float alongside co-stars and Ashley Tisdale, Corbin Bleu, and Monique Coleman singing the number "We're All in This Together", both Grabeel and Bleu splitting half of Zac Efron's (Troy) lines from the song. Grabeel also sang the same song, at the 2006 Miss Teen USA pageant, singing the chorus by himself while the contestants introduced themselves. In June 2007, he returned to the Disney Channel Games as captain of the green team with Dylan Sprouse, Miley Cyrus, Monique Coleman and Brandon Baker and later starred in the 2008 Walt Disney Pictures film College Road Trip as Scooter, which features other Disney stars Raven-Symone, Brenda Song and Margo Harshman.
Grabeel recently filmed the movie Alice Upside Down, as the character of Lester McKinley, which is an independent film based on the "Alice" book series by Phyllis Reynolds Naylor. It was released direct-to-DVD in July 2008, in the movie, he is seen with a shaven head, due to the role of Lester coming so shortly after he had portrayed a young Lex Luthor, in the television series Smallville. He also recorded the voice of a dog in the upcoming animated film, At Jesus' Side. In January 2007, he finished touring on the High School Musical: The Concert. Grabeel also recorded "You Know I Will" for The Fox and the Hound 2. On April 13, 2007, Grabeel finished production on High School Musical 2, in which he returned as Ryan Evans. This premiered on the Disney Channel on August 17, 2007. He had duets with Tisdale as in the original movie, but also had a "show stopper" song with Corbin Bleu (as Chad) in "I Don't Dance." Grabeel also recorded "Go The Distance" for the CD Disneymania 5. He will also be starring as Ezra in The Adventures of Food Boy. He will appear in the movie Milk, a biopic about the slain gay rights activist Harvey Milk. Grabeel is playing a friend and supporter of Milk, Danny Nicoletta, who worked at a camera store Milk owned. Grabeel's latest movie project is Tokyo Jones: The Legend of The Dancing Ninja, often mistaken, due to an error that originated in a Japanese magazine, as the sequel to Beverly Hills Ninja.
